mason

the B word follow up.

I blogged the other day about someone acting like a spoiled brat! Well, I can honestly say this week hasn’t been as horrible as I imagined. We have really been working on the not giving in too easily, presents all the time, special outings every day.

Yes, yesterday when I took him to the store he got his backpack/lunch box for school but we stopped to look at all the toy aisles and I didn’t get any tantrums when I told him no. Otherwise that is the only thing he has received this week. And let me just say that was hard for both him and myself; he asked me just about every day to go “buy a new toy” or “get a McDonald’s happy meal”(that’s another thing we have been eating out way too often this summer and no not just at McDonald’s)… I couldn’t do my .99 cent day at Value Village knowing he would beg for a new to him toy. Even though the toy would of been less than $5, kids don’t know the difference between $1 and $50 toys. So red flag for any parents raising a kid who gets a new “prize” every time he/she is good in a store, teaching bad habits you will regret!!

Take away things they really enjoy. Mason has had a few days with no screen time, it’s kinda sad that is the only punishment he really cares about. Time outs, spankings really don’t phase him but when you take away or threaten to take away his screen time, that’s what gets him…
LIMIT screen time.
LIMIT sugar intake. This is another huge one for Mason, it really effects his mood.

It’s progress.

What did he just say?

As you may know Mason says the funniest things sometimes!

Mason said to me “Let’s go to the kid store”, so I said “What kid store do you want to go to?” He replies with “The one where you can buy kids”

We were watching Who Framed Roger Rabbit, when jessica rabbit came on he was just starring all googly eyes and goes “p-r-e-t-t-y”

We were outside with the neighbor kids and our 5 year old neighbor girl is talking about water with Mason and says “we have some in here” and he replies with “No, I don’t like beer” and the little 4th grader neighbor looks at me all surprised and starts to giggle.

5 year old’s are so honest and just blurt things out! We were getting pizza one day and we walk past a shorter guy and Mason blurts out “man, that guy is short” thankfully I don’t think he heard him

Anytime we are in the swimming pool or locker room if he sees a woman with big poops he blurts out “she has some big muscles”

the B word

Lately, I keep having the thought “what am I doing wrong” and it all has to do with someones behavior. Some say I’m such a great mom, I’m so laid back and always have it under control but that’s the opposite and now my laid back personality is biting me in the butt.
He’s just been so, hate to use the word but bratty!! Mouthy, he tries to control the situation way too often. We are sick of having to repeat ourselves over and over again. We hate to spank but I swear that is the only way we get anything through to him. He isn’t grateful for anything. Get the picture?
We realize our kid is getting that “only child spoiled brat” attitude and it needs to stop! I love being able to take him to new places, go everywhere and get special treats all the time but it’s not good for him, he takes it for granted. He needs to start earning the special places we go to and the new toys need to stop and only come for holidays.
This will be a challenge for me too because I love buying him new stuff and letting him experience everything. I know he’s only 5 but he shouldn’t expect a new thing every place we go and get upset if he doesn’t get one.
Parenting is hard work sometimes!
Last week I wasn’t saying this… but I can’t wait for school to start.

5th Birthday Weekend

Mason had a pretty awesome birthday weekend. Party with family & friends, cousins spent the night and the big zoo in Seattle for his actual birth date.

I will say I loved how laid back his party was, and I had the whole day to just relax and get everything ready. I do love throwing at home, none of that “pinterest” style parties. We had about 10 kids and 10 adults, served pizza and cake, did a pinata and pin the pirate chest.
This is how our day started, grandma and cousins came over early and we drink a green drink. Sorry for the cell phone pictures, now that I have a smart phone it makes taking pictures so easy and convenient but I need to get back in the habit of pulling out my camera.
I made cupcakes for the kids and then better than sex chocolate cake for all the grownups ;) Can’t believe my little man is already 5!
He got a lot of awesome presents(thanks everyone!) and still has a lot of money to spend but I think we’ll just keep that in his savings account. He got a bigger size bike from my husband and I, it was supposed to be a surprise but he’s a little snoop!
Then Sunday(his actual birth date) we went to the Woodland Park Zoo. It might not of been sunny or even dry but it wasn’t crowded at all so it made it a great day to go! And I won’t bore you with a bunch of animal pictures.
And Mason got a kinect for his birthday, so we’ve been doing a lot of that :) It’s a great workout. That sums up our 5th Birthday Weekend. For how busy it was, it was a very relaxing weekend. Those are the best!
